There is a great chance that a TESOL class will include many
cultures. Culture can create inspiration and sometimes it can cause much
frustration. Learning and understanding more to increase awareness will help a teacher
to watch for and identify situations in the classroom that can be helpful or
hurtful.
Students often look to each other for help in learning, but
due to the different backgrounds of each student, help is not always what takes
place. Confidence and respect might be missing, but time and effort can help
that improve. Building friendships will increase the unity within a classroom
and allowing students to share their knowledge of subjects creates the potential
for more growth.
The self-esteem of each student is important and can be
strengthened when given opportunities to overcome mental frustrations,
discouragement with struggling to speak or understand English, or learning to
accept and adjust to the changes that have taken place in one’s life. The role
a teacher plays is one of great importance and can be an influence for good in
situations that take place in the classroom. Students improve in many ways when
they are in a positive environment and advance their learning.
